PUNK RAWK ELVIS

Love Elvis or hate him? Either way and you can still enjoy the crazy sights and sounds of PUNK RAWK ELVIS.      This 5 piece (sometimes 6) were the first in our area to fuse the sweet sounds of the King with raw punk rock and rockabilly. Fun, catchy tunes along with their great stage show, original lyrics and zany getups, earned them a coveted spot on the upcoming, new Nardcore compilation album.
The sweet duel vocals of Nardcore veteran Elvis Knievel and the beautiful PrissZilla just can’t be beat and the bands recent appearance at Nicholby’s with ILL REPUTE was a testament to that with each of their songs ending to thunderous applaude.

Global Warning

We decided to catch up with these guys and ask them a few questions so you can get to know them better...

#1 So you guys have been a staple in the Nardcore scene for quite some time. When did Global Warning form and what influenced the decision to start the band?

(Randy) - I was working at Mazda on the base in the 80’s.  I mentioned that I was learning to play the guitar and had written some songs. One of the other installers knew Jim of Ill Reputes brother who worked at Mazda too. They said to come check out a show and I did. It changed my life.  I had been trying to write songs that fit a certain mold that I had in my head, but hearing Tony, John, Jim, and Carl create such energy and connection with the people I realized that I should just write about how I felt and that there were no more rules.  A friend from high school Kellen Corica played drums and he knew Brad Golemon (a guitarist) who we convinced to play bass for half the set and then we’d switch.  Getting Chris was a good story. Kellen had met him through Steve Rodriquez and mentioned he wanted to be a vocalist.  Kellen and I drove over to his house and on the way we see this guy driving a car backwards down Ocean St. with two guys chasing him.  Kellen looks at me and says, “That’s the Chris dude in that car.” We followed him and after he lost the two goons we asked him if he would be interested. He showed up and at our first jam and we wrote 7 songs, some we still play today.

(Chris) - I had a big pile of songs I wrote after hearing some punk for the first time. I always wrote songs and poetry that was darker and more personal, and I thought, hey this is for me. I showed some stuff to Casey (French) and he thought I should show these to Mark (Hickey). Well Mark thought there was some good stuff in there, and I offered them up, and he said his style was a lot different, and he liked what he was writing, and I should start my own band with these songs, and right along then Randy, Kellen, and Brad (Golemon) hit me up.

# 2 Being together so long what kind of changes have you guys went through - members, music style, message to get across, those kinds of things?

(Randy) - Chris would be better at this question, but I think we have had 3 or 4 drummers, Kellen Corica, Darrin Zene, a guy named Scott I thought Paul was going to kill, and currently Nick.  After a hundred fights it was either Brad or me. We replaced Brad with Dennis Culley for a short time and then found Paul Shin and changed our name to Knucklehead.  We wrote some real good stuff with Paul on bass, as you know he is very talented which gave us a solid more organized groove.  Paul’s slap ability changed our style too, the songs became a little longer and the arrangements got more complicated. We played lots of shows in L.A. on the strip, like The Roxy, Coconut Teazer, Whiskey, and the Scene Bar.  I was hurt at work and decided to move to Texas so I could afford to live. Paul Shin and I drove across country to Houston then San Antonio.  He came back by himself with a load of antiques from Galveston. I got married and stayed for 5 years. When I returned to CA they were still playing with Brad on guitar. Brad sold his house during that real estate boom, moved to Arizona, and I slipped back in as guitarist.  Chris and I have always been the nucleus of Global Warning.

(Chris) - Members: don't forget about Boner. He was playing in Shot in the Face, and we got him on drums. It was the most turbo Global set we ever did. Nick played guitar in that band and was not a drummer until later. He has been with us on drums for 4 or 5 years now. He was 4 when the band formed. Let's not also forget Gian Bowles, playing bass with us for about 5 years, and is the bass on the Nardcore 30 cuts. We had a great time with Gain, and he will be missed. The latest member is Pat Southerland handling the bottom end. We are playing Mais Cafe on July 18 for Pat's first show with Global Warning. Music style? I feel this latest lineup shows the true Global Warning old school style, and I think we may have come full circle, but you can be the judge of that. Messages? we have always kept to a few basic concepts, Ecological disasters, with a tongue in cheek attitude, stupidity in society, and stuff about people we know, or personal situations.

# 3 You guys have 2 tracks on the new "Nardcore - 30 Years Later" which are very good. What's the story behind these songs?
"Beat Me Right" is that based on an actual first hand experience?

(Randy) - Chris usually writes the lyrics, but I brought this song in completed. When I moved to Hollywood to attend GIT the first day there I was arrested and handcuffed on the street for stealing a car.  They kept me detained for hours on the sidewalk until some asshole sergeant came by, looked at me and said, “That’s not him.” That started my distrust of the police. Then came the Rodney King beating.  We played a show the night of the riots with Brandon’s band Harmful If Swallowed in Simi Valley.  I wrote the song Beat Me Right in response to my experience and to the video of the beating.

And "Never Was" is kinda self-explanatory but what's the story there and do you guys think you will hit the road more soon?

(Randy) - We wrote this one over the phone.  Chris had some words and a sound in his mind about the chorus.  I came up with the progression and arrangement, just one of those songs that come to you. Like Keith Richards said, “I’m just an antenna for the shit that’s floating around.”

(Chris) - I was at my brothers house. It is also AAH DA BEEYAS practice place. Joe (bass) and Geoff (guitar) are my nephews. Me and bro were bbq'in and da beeyas were having a drinking contest where you duct tape your fresh beer to the top of your empty. The guy with his height wins. Tone (vox) sat down next to me with a 4' stack, and looked over and said "You guys are..like..the band that never was..." and I was looking for paper and pen to write that one down...but it's true, We wouldn't have it any other way.

# 4 You guys have played with Fear and other great bands. What was your favorite show you played and why?

(Randy) - My favorite show was with the Adolescents at Mogz.  Chris was beyond drunk on Black Death Vodka backstage, and Rik Agnew was passing out acid, Paul wore a long dread wig and was so drunk he was calling the crowd a bunch of pussies cause he didn’t think there was enough slamming. It turned into a fantastic show. Mike Akuna carrying Paul through the crowd on his shoulders, people running everywhere on stage, just one of those bitch’in old-school moments.

(Chris) - Favorite...wow..This might be easier than I thought. We played a bar called Hussings in Ventura. It was the last night before it was closed for good. The capacity had to be 3 times more than legal. there was no stage. You were at ground level with the crowd. We played with Tripmaster Monkey and Agression. I believe it was their last time through here. We played first or second, I don't remember, but when we finished, we sat on the bar and ordered beers. Every time a few songs went by, the fuckers raised the price of beer. We sat there on the bar, and every time the bartender was busy, we would pour ourselves free beer off the tap. Everybody that saw us doing it got up on the bar with us, and, boy we were getting lit. Too bad so many people sat up there, because we caused the whole bar to crash to the floor. Another great memory was "Rock for tots" It was a toys for tots drive on Saviors Road. I don't remember if it was VFW or Elks club, but there were lot's of bands. Ill Repute, us, and a bunch more. Well somebody fucked up and we were supposed to play the main room, but there was also a Christmas dinner planned for the main room, so we were assigned this glorified closet. A beautiful Christmas dinner for the old war vets, with punk rock bleeding through the walls. I remember that you had to bring a toy for tot, and these giant punks in full gear and mohawks out to there carrying teddy bears in their arms for the cost of admission. The closet was packed beyond reason, and there were collapsable tables all around the room. We looked around, and it was all quiet, and everyone was in the middle or crouching on the tables, like mountain lions, and the first note brought them all alive and kicking, and the whole night was off the hook from then on.

# 5 Anything you want to tell anybody reading this?

(Randy) - We have plenty of demos out there and plan to release a proper album soon. We like to play were the energy is-right here in the 805.

(Chris) - I see a lot of kids that are influenced by the Nardcore scene, and I don't think it's going to fade away anytime too soon. I see a lot of talented and artistic kids growing up and I'm truly proud of all of them.

Thanks guys - see ya on Sat. July 18th at Mai’s!
